20190726 – Mandurah Friday – Winter Sprint Final

“Optical overcomes slow start to win Winter Sprint”

A star-studded lineup was assembled for tonight’s Greyhounds WA Winter Sprint Final. Race favourite Optical drew nicely in box two but didn’t begin with much alacrity. Mottza charged out of box eight but was unable to cross because Equity Fund held up from the inside alley. Optical was then able to manouevre down to the fence and track through to the lead. She then burst through at the top of the straight and held Equity Fund by a length in the battle to the line. Optical recorded a moderate 22.76, a time well outside her personal best of 22.44 mainly because of the fact that she didn’t secure an outright lead early on. She has now won 8 of 10 career starts for Nambeelup trainer Paul Stuart.

HOUNDS TO FOLLOW :

Race 1 Number 8 LEILANI’S LAD : Appreciated the wide draw and worked hiome stylishly for second.

Race 3 Number 8 ON THE TAKE : Powered home for an eye-catching second.

“Wijnaldum causes major surprise in Free For All”

Wijnaldum is a greyhound that was bred by Canning Vale based trainer Jamie Marsh. He was named after Dutch soccer play Georginio Wijnaldum who currently plays for English side Liverpool. The greyhound displayed serious potential at the beginning of his career, winning 6 of his first 13 starts including a fast time of 30.10 over 520m at Cannington last October. However after slow getaways at his two most recent outings he finished out of the placings which led to him starting at huge odds tonight. Sent out at $42.40 with the WA TAB, the son of Collision sped out of box three and quickly tackled Fun Boss for the lead. Odds on favourite Astrozone had begun only fairly but mustered into third at the first turn. Wijnaldum shook off Fun Boss but Astrozone was finishing powerfully and turning for home there was only two lengths between the rank outsider and the short priced favourite. To the surprise of most Wijnaldum maintained that two length advantage and clocked a slashing 27.41 over the 490m distance. Astrozone finished second ahead of Cosmic Luck who rattled home for third. Wijnaldum has now won 9 of 23 career starts and is unlikely to ever start more than $21 ever again.
