20200606 – Cannington Saturday – Winter Cup Heats

CATCH THE THIEF (Aussie Infrared- Dundee Ally) set a new race record as he easily accounted for a class field in the opening heat of the Fuller Fitness Winter Cup. After winning the Gr 2 Brittons Formal Wear WA Derby, trainer Matthew Clark decided to leave his star in WA with Krystal and Steve Shinners for this series. Up against the track record holder Campini and Perth Cup place getter Buster The Brute, the Victorian chaser bounced to the top and went clear down the back straight. The light fawn dog defeated Joker Poker by 7 1/2 lengths in 29.56 and will now start a short priced favourite in next weeks final.

TOMMY SHELBY (Fernando Bale- Serena Fly High) had to overcome numerous bumps in his endeavours to find the fence, however the tough Casuarina flyer didn’t let any dog stand in his way and he held on to win the second heat of the listed Winter Cup by a head over Cindy’s Oliver in 30.03. The Steve Withers trained youngster has now won 12 of 15 career starts and gets another opportunity at trying to topple the Victorian star Catch The Thief in next weeks final.

ZACK MONELLI (Barcia Bale- Penny Monelli) impressed on debut over the 600 metres defeating kennel mates Redcap Monelli and Snickers Monelli. The David Hobby trained star, who finished second behind Simon Told Helen in the Gr 1 Sky Racing Perth Cup earlier in the year, settled close to the leader Redcap Monelli and after peeling off his heels went on to win by a half length in 34.63.
