After winning the Gr 2 Brittons Formal Wear WA Derby, trainer Matthew Clark decided to leave his star in WA with Krystal and Steve Shinners for this series. Up against the track record holder Campini and Perth Cup place getter Buster The Brute, the Victorian chaser bounced to the top and went clear down the back straight. “West On Augie wins the Winter Cup for Chris Halse”

The Winter Cup was first run back in 1975 when Kwinana Lad scored on the original grass track over 530m in 32.12. Notable winners since include Sandi’s Me Mum (1989 and 1990), Corn Dolly (1999), Eye Murunna (2008), Hot Irish (2012) and Fun Boss (2016). A terrific field was assembled for the $30,000 final tonight but the event was over after 100m when National Sprint Champion West On Augie cleared his rivals from box eight. The champ was never in any doubt once he found the front and scored by a comfortable six length margin. Outside Snazzy Whompo ran on nicely for second ahead of Quara’s Zade who finished third. West On Augie has now won 30 of 44 at Cannington, 35 of 59 overall and more than $397,000 in stake money. ‘Augie’ is just three years and four months old and has plenty more racing left in him.

HOUNDS TO FOLLOW :

Race 1 Number 2 GO GETTEM KRACKA : Made up ground late and with room early he will take a power of beating at his next start.

Race 3 Number 4 JERKY BOY : Was unable to lead but stuck on well to finish a close up third and is ready to win.

“Hecton Bale charges into Winter Cup Final”

Super greyhound Hecton Bale prevailed narrowly in the first heat of the Winter Cup this evening, pipping Adelaide speedster Alicante Bouchet on the line. The croweater began like a rocket and posted a sizzling 5.38 to the first turn but went down by a nose after the judges took a couple of minutes to separate the chasers. Boom youngster Premium Share made up many lengths on a track that wasn’t conjusive to coming from behind. He was just a length away in third position and is one of the most promising greyhounds we’ve seen in some time. The son of Kinloch Brae turns two next month and recently won the WA Derby and also clocked an elite 34.68 over 600m last week. Cropduster salvaged fourth and a spot in the final after beginning only fairly. Heat Two was dominated throughout by West On Augie who rode early bumps to lead throughout in 30.11, a time half a length faster than Hecton Bale’s run. The James Jeffries prepared Quara’s Zade battled on strongly to finish second ahead of Snazzy Whompo and Garbrandt. West On Augie has now won 34 of 58 and earned over $377,000 in earnings.
