“Neil Monelli sizzles home to win Summer Chase”

The Summer Chase is a 600m feature race held at Cannington and last year was taken out by the fleet-footed Woodvale Flyer. Tonight a quality field was assembled with Neil Monelli (box 8) starting a warm favourite ahead of Astrozone (box 3) and Moment To Jive (box 1). Starlight Asha won the start and quickly crossed to the fence to lead Astrozone. Neil Monelli with a lap to go settled in fifth position but was only a few lengths from the leader. Astrozone reeled in Starlight Asha just before straightening but Neil Monelli was looming large on the outside. The pair straightened on equal terms but Neil Monelli unleashed a mighty finish to score by three lengths. He posted a near record 34.55 over the 600m distance and continues to impress over the longer journeys. In other staying news WA’s Quick Jagger has drawn box one in the upcoming Zoom Top Final at The Meadows (over 725m).

“Astrozone wins over 600m”

The Summer Chase is a 600m series and two quality heats were assembled tonight over the middle distance. The first saw the Sarah Appleton prepared Moment To Jive charge home to win in 35.07. Jazz Get On who was sent out at $51 fixed odds gave plenty of cheek, leading to the top of the home straight and only losing by a length. Race favourite Starlight Asha finished third just ahead of Legit Boss (fourth) who passed a few in the run home to also make the final. Heat Two loomed as a showdown between 715m track record holder Neil Monelli and top sprinters Astrozone and Eminent Reality. Astrozone began sswiftly from box five and quickly out-mustered his rivals to lead. The field packed behind him and with Neil Monelli caught up in traffic Astrozone was able to establish a big lead of around 8 lengths in the middle stages. Neil Monelli broke free of the congestion late and rattled home for second but was beaten by five lengths. The Port Kennedy based Cruiser Coin snuck third spot ahead of former Victorian Chezzy Allen. Astrozone clocked a fast 34.82 for Paul Stuart and will take running down in the final. Due to a steward’s enquiry into Eminent Reality’s performance (finished fifth) in the second heat, the box draw didn’t take place and will be released on Tuesday afternoon by the grader.
