The Noel Mugavin owned bitch was sent across to Chris Halse to prepare for the rich final and drew ideally in box 2 in the final after being beaten a head by Kiss Me Linda in her heat the week before. Mugavin won the Gr 1 Galaxy final with her mother Born Ali in 2014 and has always had a liking for WA after playing football for the West Perth Football Club during his career. The win was just Grace Ali’s third from 25 career starts.

20190510 – Mandurah Friday – Oaks Final

“Fancy Francene wins Greyhounds WA Mandurah Oaks”

A handy field was assembled for tonight’s $12,000 Mandurah Oaks Final with former Victorian Fancy Francene being sent out an odds on favourite from box four. The daughter of Barcia Bale ran second in her heat from box eight after being galloped on at the first turn. Tonight she improved at box rise and zipped to an early lead with the two heat winners Banjo’s Girl (box 6) and It’s A Diamond (box 7) also jumping quickly. Fancy Francene surged a few lengths clear at half way but couldn’t shake off Banjo’s Girl who was sticking to her guns. Turning for home Banjo’s Girl loomed as a threat as she closed to within two lengths but then wobbled a bit wide which allowed Fancy Francene to claim the feature win. She scored by two lengths in a smart 27.52 for Nambeelup trainer Chris Halse. The Rod Noden prepared Banjo’s Girl finished a gallant second ahead of the fast finishing Spritely Dove who snatched third. Fancy Francene at the young age of two years has now started 13 times for 4 wins, 7 minor placings and over $25,000 in earnings.

Premium Share (box 3), It’s A Storm (box 7) and Sprite Monelli (box 8) started favourites after qualifying in swift times last week. Hastie Guess (box 4) won the jump and was joined quickly in the early stages by the mustering Sprite Monelli. As the field charged down the back straight It’s A Storm surged to the front for Port Kennedy trainer Krystal Shinners. The son of Barcia Bale sustained his momentum and went on to win by a length in 27.56. Hastie Guess resurfaced late to be the runner up ahead of the Harvey based Incredible Hero who stole third. Sprite Monelli finished close up in fourth position for David Hobby. It’s A Storm is now unbeaten after four career starts all of which have been at the Mandurah circuit. WEST ON AUGIE (Fernando Bale- Te Amo) led throughout to record his biggest win in his short career in the final of the $60,000 Gr 2 WA Derby. The Chris Halse trained dog jumped on to the arm and raced clear to defeat Eighty Eight by 8 lengths in 29.60. The win took his stake earnings past $132,000 plus the extra WA bonuses for being WA bred. Halse combined with Linda Britton to win their first WA Derby with Reggemite in 1998.

STARLIGHT YOYO (Fernando Bale- Starlight Delly) lifted past the Victorian bitch Slingshot Gypsy on straightening to score a 1 1/4 length win in the first heat of the Gr 2 WA Oaks. The Paul Stuart trained bitch is undefeated in 5 career starts and recorded a PB 29.90 in defeating Corona Monelli with a neck further back in third place Slingshot Gypsy.

POPPY MONELLI (Fabregas- Jackie Bale) started a short priced favourite in the second heat of the WA Oaks and didn’t let her supporters down even though she was headed early by Victorian bitch She’s Gifted. The David Hobby trained black bitch refused to leave the rail and pushed through underneath the leader going off the back straight. She went on to score by 2 1/2 lengths in 29.81 over Cropduster.

PETRIA MONELLI (Fernando Bale- Sharon Monelli) led from box 7 and gave trainer David Hobby his fourth runner through to next weeks Gr2 WA Oaks final worth $60,000. The black bitch led throughout to defeat Queensland trained bitch Brandi Alexander in 30.02.

“Starlight Yoyo and Sieben Monelli take out Mandurah Oaks and Derby”

The inaugural Mandurah Oaks and Derby series were run in 1994 and the respective winners were Cape Cuvier and Hugs And Dreams. Quality lineups were assembled for tonight’s $8,000 to the winner finals. The Oaks was run first and while favourite Poppy Monelli dashed to an outright lead from box one unbeaten youngster Starlight Yoyo landed on the rail in second spot. Turning for home Starlight Yoyo railed to the front and scored narrowly in 27.51 to hand Nambeelup trainer Paul Stuart his first Mandurah Oaks. The Derby produced somewhat of a surprise with $1.50 favourite West On Augie fading late and finishing out of the placings. David Hobby won his third Mandurah Derby with Sieben Monelli who swept down the outside to beat It’s The Horse in 27.49. Hobby prepared Mario Monelli to victory in 2002 and Chuck Monelli in 2010. The upcoming WA Oaks/Derby series at Cannington (over 520m) promise plenty and often attract interstate raiders given the generous prize money on offer.

HOUNDS TO FOLLOW :

Race 4 Number 6 CROPDUSTER : Didn’t begin very well but rallied late to finish fourth. Definitely one to follow.

Race 6 Number 2 IONA CARLSON : Battled on well behind Decimal and Fire Blaze to run third in a smart time.

“Aeroplane Tommy resumes with outstanding performance over 405m”

Former topline chaser Aeroplane Tommy produced a mighty first up performance in tonight’s Free For All over 405m. The son of Turanza Bale hadn’t raced for ten months and when last in work was racing against the best in the state over 600m and 647m. Tonight he began fairly against a bunch of fellow greybeards (four years plus) and settled second behind the pace-making Jamaica The Fun. He reached the lead in the middle stages before charging to the line and clocking an amazing 22.64. He finished 6.25 lengths ahead of Jamaica The Fun and a head away third was race favourite Bill’s Desire. Aeroplane Tommy has now started 46 times for 16 wins and 15 minor placings. Unfortunately the box draw for the Mandurah Derby didn’t take place due to ongoing steward enquiries but the Mandurah Oaks draw was conducted by stewards Carlos Martins and Cameron Kerr :

SASSY GINGER (Kinloch Brae- Sassy Guess) took out the Gr 2 Britton’s Formal Wear WA Derby and continued the winning run of trainer Enzo Crudeli who had earlier in the year won his first Gr 1 Sky Racing Perth Cup. Crudeli also won last years WA Derby with Shell Shocked. The red brindle dog owned by Jodie Jennings, shot to the lead from box 5 and raced clear to win by 2 1/2 lengths over Honcho Monelli and Ouchamp in 30.22. The race favourite and track record holder Quick Jagger was checked on the first corner when Vanderworp checked off heels in front of him. For Sassy Ginger though the win took his stake earnings past $120,000 after having been placed earlier in the year behind kennel mate Equanimity in the Perth Cup final.

WEST ON MAISIE (Barcia Bale- Zelemar Fever) was able to hunt up along the rails and hold the lead going into the first corner before racing into next weeks Gr 2 Final of the WA Oaks. The Chris Halse trained bitch is undefeated in 4 starts from box 1 and held off the Sara Appleton trained Moment To Jive by a length in 30.01 in the opening heat.

MOMENT TO RUMBA (Mogambo- Sharon Monelli) was nearly last past the judge the first time before weaving his way through the field to give young trainer Sara Appleton her first winner in a heat of a Gr 2 series. The black bitch swept up on the leader Lini Danco on the home corner and went on to win by 2 1/4 lengths in 30.44. Appleton now has two finalists in next weeks Gr 2 WA Oaks, a remarkable feat considering she was in a coma and on life support only a few years ago.

MY NAME’S EMMA (Bookkeeper- Isabrooke) jumped well from box 7 and crashed across to lead past the judge the first time before setting up a handy break along the back straight. The brindle bitch went on to win the third heat by 3 lengths over Weedle Monelli in 30.22. Trained Terry Erenshaw won the WA Oaks last year with Molly Keeping.

CADICE (Barcia Bale- Poco) finished off a very good week for trainer John Carmody as she led throughout to win the 4th heat of the WA Oaks. Carmody had been diagnosed and treated for Cancer and earlier in the week was given the all clear of the disease by his doctors. Cadice defeated West On Beth by 4 lengths in 30.30.

“Paul Stuart goes back to back in Mandurah Derby”

The Mandurah Derby was first run in 1994 when Cape Cuvier saluted for Hans Spykers. Other notable winners include Wits End (1995), Prince Of Tigers (1997), Benno (2009), Uno Reltub (2011) and Stanga Doug (2015). Never has a Mandurah Derby Final produced such a strong lineup with the West Pinjarra prepared Max Profit starting a $2.50 favourite. Things went to plan early for Max Profit who pinged from the boxes and held out early challengers Vanderworp (box 2) and Equanimity (box 5) to maintain an outright lead. The Paul Stuart (pictured) prepared Astrozone settled fourth and was railing strongly in the middle stages. Just prior to straightening Max profit was only a length in front with Astrozone closing quickly. With fifty metres to go Astrozone powered to the front before charging away to win by three lengths in a near record 27.09. The 520m Cannington track record holder Quick Jagger rattled home for second with Max Profit relegated to third. Trainer Paul Stuart also won the race last year when Topology scored in 27.82.

The Mandurah Oaks box draw did not take place tonight after the four heats with two ongoing steward’s enquiries taking place. The grader will release the final field on Tuesday afternoon.

HOUNDS TO FOLLOW :

Race 3 Number 8 SAHANNAH MONELLI : Finished like a rocket to snatch second despite looking to hit the rail earlier in the race.

Race 5 Number 6 SARA MONELLI : Made up an enormous amount of ground to win in 27.65.
