20200530 – Cannington Saturday – W.A. Oaks Final


COBARGO (Burn One Down- Abby Normal) gave trainer Kody Charles his biggest moment in the sport of greyhound racing winning the Gr 2 Greyhounds WA, WA Oaks in the last stride. The young black bitch who doesn’t turn two years of age until August, jumped well and then charged home to claim the leader Mermaid Monelli on the line to win by a half head in 30.20. The win was extra special for Charles and his wife Brittany who welcomed a new baby girl earlier this year.

WEST ON AXEL (Bella Infrared- West On Babe) led throughout to record his second career victory and ended a losing sequence of 8 in the process. The Chris Halse trained dog clocked a PB 29.99 in defeating Jet A One by 2 1/4 lengths.

ZACK MONELLI (Barcia Bale- Penny Monelli) had to overcome early trouble soon after the start and then weave through traffic before going away to score a convincing win over Steve Monelli in 30.06. The David Hobby trained youngster suffered a fall in the recent Mandurah Derby before finishing fourth in a heat of the Gr 2 Brittons Formal Wear WA Derby two weeks later.

FLAKE MONELLI (Fernando Bale- Dyna Sandy) put her rivals too the sword with a dominant all the way victory over the 715 metres winning by 11 lengths in 41.84. The David Hobby trained bitch has now won 6 times over the distance and took her stake earnings past $100,000 plus breeders and owners WA bred bonuses.

20200523 – Cannington Saturday – W.A. Derby Final & W.A Oaks Heats

CATCH THE THIEF (Aussie Infrared- Dundee Ally) led throughout to win the Group 2 Brittons Formal Wear WA Derby final by 6 lengths over Buster The Brute in a race record 29.32. The Matthew Clark trained Victorian dog clocked a 5.32 first split which put the race to bed before the first corner. The light fawn dog then raced away to record his 11th career win from 18 starts and almost doubled his stake earnings going past $70,000. Buster The Brute has now finished second in the Group 2 WA Derby and third in the Group 1 Perth Cup this year.

THRIFT MONELLI (Barcia Bale- Penny Monelli) claimed her kennel mate and leader Mermaid Monelli going along the back straight before driving away to win the opening heat of the Group 2 WA Oaks. The David Hobby pair were split on the line by Veyron Star with the winner going 30.05.

COBARGO (Burn One Down- Abby Normal) led throughout to take out the second heat of the Group 2 WA Oaks. The Kody Charles trained bitch was having just her 10th career start and she has now won 4 times. The black bitch defeated West On Magada by 1 1/4 lengths in 30.01 with Pixie Monelli back in third place.

20200508 – Mandurah Friday – Mandurah Oaks

“Star Book conquers three Monellis to win Mandurah Oaks”

Brilliant young bitch Star Book overcame box five to take out tonight’s $30,000 Mandurah Oaks against a star-studded lineup.

Prepared by Canning Vale based trainer Jamie Marsh, the daughter of Barcia Bale began cleanly and drifted to the centre of the track whilst Mermaid Monelli flew out of box one to lead.

Entering the back straight Mermaid Monelli held a two length lead with litter sister Pixie Monelli in hot pursuit on the inside of Star Book.

The third of the David Hobby runners Thrift Monelli settled in fourth position ahead of West On Bloom.

Leaving the back straight Star Book made her move and challenged strongly for the front before surging away in the home straight to score by three lengths.

Pixie Monelli narrowly grabbed second over Thrift Monelli and a fading fourth was Mermaid Monelli.

Star Book is out of great producing dam Saving Bundles who has mothered the likes of Quick Jagger, Bundles Galore, Garbrandt, Rockhold and Skipper’s Ticket.

She has now racked up nine victories from sixteen career starts and tonight’s time of 27.10 was just over a length outside of Zack Monelli’s track record.

Later in the evening highly promising stayer Casus Belli scored over the 647m staying trip, giving Jamie Marsh a training double.

Race 1 Number 1 TURBO FUN : Bolted in from box one and clocked a flying 22.56, he turns two in September.

Race 3 Number 7 TANDEM AT PACE : Overcame a poor jump and first turn traffic problems to post a strong win in 22.82.

GRACE ALI (My Bro Fabio- Born Ali) recorded a brilliant win in the Gr 2 final of the Greyhounds WA, WA Oaks coming from behind the leader Kiss Me Linda to win by 3/4 length in 30.03. The Noel Mugavin owned bitch was sent across to Chris Halse to prepare for the rich final and drew ideally in box 2 in the final after being beaten a head by Kiss Me Linda in her heat the week before. Mugavin won the Gr 1 Galaxy final with her mother Born Ali in 2014 and has always had a liking for WA after playing football for the West Perth Football Club during his career. The win was just Grace Ali’s third from 25 career starts.

QUARA’S ZADE (Fernando Bale- Quara Bale) was able to cross from box 6 and although pressurised throughout by Moto Doll, the black dog found plenty in the home straight to win by a half length in 30.04. The James Jeffries trained dog has now won 9 times from 31 starts.

WEST ON AUGIE (Fernando Bale- Te Amo) was able to find the lead from box 5 and showed his true quality with a 5 length win over Slingshot Gypsy in 29.79. The Chris Halse trained star was checked numerous times last week as an odds on favourite and finished out of the placings. He has now won 33 times from 57 career starts.

20190525 – Cannington Saturday – W.A. Oaks Heats & Derby Final

PREMIUM SHARE (Kinloch Brae- Shared Equity) demolished his rivals with a 9 length victory in the Gr 2 Brittons Formal Wear WA Derby final. The win gave trainer Chris Halse back to back wins in the Gr 2 final after West On Augie won last year. The well bred black dog has now won 5 times from just 12 starts and doesn’t turn two years of age until July. It’s a Storm, who led early finished second aged of Rockstar Beav in a slick 29.56.

CIRCLE OF DREAMS (Barcia Bale- Mepunga Mia) recorded a brilliant 4 length win in the opening heat of the Gr 2 WA Oaks. Now in the care of trainer Chris Halse, the Victorian owned bitch led into the first corner at her first look at the track before defeating fellow Victorian bitch She Will Bloom in 29.85. The Gr 1 and dual Gr 2 winner will take a power of beating in next weeks $60,000 final.

FANCY FRANCENE (Barcia Bale- Eyes Adorable) appreciated her look at the track the previous week as put paid to her rivals from box 1 in the second heat of the Gr 2 WA Oaks. The Chris Halse prepared chaser went 5.50 early before stopping the clock at 29.94, 2 1/4 lengths ahead of her nearest rival Banjo’s Girl.

KISS ME LINDA (Kinloch Brae- West On Bluebird) led throughout to win the third heat of the Gr 2 WA Oaks and give trainer wins in all 3 heats. The black bitch defeated Victorian raider Grace Ali by a half head in 29.93. Owned by the From the Jockeys Mouth syndicate, the little bitch competed in the GR 1 Perth Cup final earlier this year.
