“Chris Halse wins Kanyana Cup with West On Mortar”

A star-studded lineup was assmebled for tonight’s Kanyana Cup Final over 490m. Outsider West On Hazy flew out from box four to lead and at the first turn was challenged on the inside by West On Mortar and on the outside by Solidified. West On Mortar used the box one advantage to find the lead and when Solidified checked off the heels of West On Hazy the race looked all over. West On Mortar glided clear to score by a comfortable five length margin over the fast finishing Pudding Monelli who made up a stack of ground after a poor start. Solidified rounded out the Trifecta ahead of rank outsider Zipping Stefan who finished fourth. West On Mortar has now won four in a row for connections Linda Britton, Craig Weston, Gary Weston and trainer Chris Halse.

HOUNDS TO FOLLOW :

Race 2 Number 2 GOT THE MESSAGE : Flew out of the boxes before winning brilliantly by seven lengths.

Race 3 Number 8 ALL OVER KAJA : Relished box eight and won easily in a fast 22.73.

Tough Ask for Stuart’s Duo in Kanyana Cup

Nambeelup-based trainer Paul Stuart believes his two runners in the Prime Trophies Kanyana Cup, Love Me Tinder and Garbrandt, face a “tricky” task after both drew wide boxes for the 490m final at Mandurah this Friday.

The Stuart-trained pair will compete against some talented and in-form opposition including the fastest qualifier Junk Yard Muppet and West On Hazel.

“It’s a really nice, even field. I couldn’t really pick a standout,” Stuart said.

“The race is a bit of lottery and I’ve got two tickets but the draw hasn’t made it easy for me.”

Stuart was quick to nominate the highly promising Love Me Tinder as the better of his two chances.

After racing exclusively over the 405m Love Me Tinder had no problems stepping up to the 490m journey last weekend.

The speedy brindle eased into the trophy decider after winning his heat by nearly five lengths in 27.55.

Love Me Tinder is not drawn to suit out in six although Stuart takes encouragement from the fact that he won out of box five last start.

“He can be a bit hit-and-miss out of the boxes but as long as he gets a clean start he’ll be able to put himself up there and run time,” he said.

Garbrandt booked his place in the final, where he’ll wear the pink, after finishing runner-up to $38 longshot Jump In Line in their heat clash.

“He’s a mad railer on the corner start so it going to be difficult for him but you never know,” Stuart said.

The James Jefferies-trained Junk Yard Muppet announced himself as a serious contender when he romped home to claim his heat by a mammoth ten lengths in 27.46.

The strong running chaser has claimed a podium finish in his past six attempts and gives Jefferies the opportunity to take out back-to-back features at the Peel circuit following his triumph in the Group 3 Birthday Cup with Quara’s Emma earlier this month.

West On Hazel is racing in top form with wins in four of her past five starts and is undefeated in two starts at Mandurah after winning her heat in 27.87.

She has the big advantage of jumping from pole in the final.

Regardless of Friday’s result Stuart is excited by Love Me Tinder’s future prospects.

“(Love Me Tinder is) progressing along really nicely and I’m looking forward to giving him a crack at city class racing in the next few weeks,” he said.

“He’s doing everything right at the moment and I think he can be competitive over the 520m in town.”
