20240209 – Mandurah Friday

“Sunset Louie charges into Mandurah Distance Challenge Final”

The Mandurah Distance Challenge was first run in 2011 when Barney Stinson won over 647m for Keith Harding. Notable winners since have been Pedro’s Finest (2013), Dubliner (2016), Serena Fly High (2017), Flake Monelli (2020) and Couch Surfer (2023). There were three heats contested tonight so first and second were guaranteed berths in the final along with the two fastest thirds. Stevie Monelli won the first heat in 37.41 and defeated Clifton Cruz by two lengths. A mini boil-over took place in Heat Two when $1.70 favourite Flying Freda was reeled in by Sunset Louie at 10/1. The Eric Campana prepared stayer came from fourth position at half way to overtake Flying Freda late and win by a head in 37.21. The third and final heat belonged to Jami Keeping who qualified fastest, leading all the way in 37.02 and winning by three lengths over sisters Chloe Ant and Ballistic Ant.
