“Steampunk Wolf sails into Birthday Cup Final”

The Birthday Cup is a time honoured race that was first run in 1979 when Newburn Lad won over the old 530m distance. Some big name winners have been Icy Monaro (1982), Fire Rock (1995), Zalock (2003), Back Tonight (2007 and 2008), Astrophysic (2016) and Miss Bamsy (2018). Seven heats were contested tonight with all winners and the fastest runner up advancing to next Friday’s $60,000 final. Lewis Clay prepared the winner of heat one with the fleet-footed Steampunk Wolf. The son of Kinloch Brae flew to an outright lead from box four and held off top sprinter Serong in a flying 22.45. He set up victory at box rise and clocked a new PB over 405m at his 44th run over the journey. Serong (second) was first up since the start of October and will benefit from the run and three lengths away third was Stargazer. The other heats were won by Yarrinup Flyer (22.66), Archibald (22.71), Sunset Piper (22.60), Bones McCoy (22.46), Destruction (22.61) and West On Brae (22.55). The Box Draw :
