20171013 – Mandurah Friday

“Astrozone wins 2017 GreyhoundsWA Mandurah Cup”

The Mandurah Cup is one of two $37,500 races held at the Peel circuit throughout the year and as always attracted a star-studded field. The Paul Stuart prepared Gold Reserve qualified fastest (in 27.10) but after an awkward box draw (box 5) wasn’t sent out as favourite. Kennel-mate Astrozone who overcame box 8 to win his heat in 27.48 came up with box 2 in the final and started a clear $3.00 favourite. When the boxes flung open Desert Rampage (box 3), Demon Bale (box 6) and Pepper Fire (box 8) all exploded out to contest the early  lead. The Enzo Crudeli trained Demon Bale won that battle and dashed three lengths clear but $2.80 favourite Astrozone had zoomed into second position and was giving chase. Turning for home Astrozone moved to the outside to challenge and finished powerfully, scoring by almost a length over Demon Bale in a race record 27.10. The time was just 0.02 outside of Back Jack Tewin’s track record that was posted back in April of 2014. The winner’s kennel-mate and half brother Gold Reserve ran on for third and Neil Monelli came from eighth in the middle stages to finish fourth. Despite having won nearly all of WA’s feature races in the past it was Nambeelup trainer Paul Stuart’s first Mandurah Cup victory.

Race 2 Number 1 FIRE BLAZE : Mustered quickly before flying around in a new PB of 22.42.

Race 5 Number 5 SHARED BONUS : Rocketed for about 350m before being overtaken by Doc Hudson. His early pace was exceptional.
