“John Iwanyk wins Kanyana Cup with Stratosphere”

The Kanyana Cup was first run in 1994 when Tawa Boy saluted for Bushmead trainer Dot Houghton. Notable winners since include Dazzling Dolly (1999), Fortified Times (2004), Uno Reltub (2011) and Crashing Packs (2015). A high quality field was assembled for tonight’s final with the David Hobby trained Neil Monelli starting favourite from box three. The son of Barcia Bale hesitated at box rise and found himself eighth at the first turn whilst kennel mate Ryan Monelli had burst to an early lead. Stratosphere with the advantage of box one was able to rail to second place before challenging in the middle stages. Stratosphere hit the lead prior to straightening and raced away for a mighty win in the sparkling time of 27.46. Neil Monelli caught the eye out wide on the track, rocketing home to be the runner up with Ryan Monelli holding on for third. Stratosphere has now started 14 times for 5 wins, 3 minor placings and over $15,000 in earnings.


Race 1 Number 6 CHEEKY TWO : Hit the line strongly and won by three lengths in 22.97.

Race 6 Number 3 NEIL MONELLI : Flew home late to grab second in another fast time.
