20170303 – Mandurah Friday

“Fire Blaze wins Great Western for Carmody”

The Great Western is a WA Bred series and was first run in 2006 when Just Got Paid saluted for John Iwanyk. Other notable winners include Jodie’s Farewell (2009), Bomber Command (2010), Man Dime (2012) and Stangafied (2015). Three heats were contested over the 405m journey last Friday with a star-studded lineup assembled for tonight’s Final. Fire Blaze had qualified fastest from the heats and from box one started a warm favourite for Banjup trainer John Carmody. He began swiftly and at the first turn shared the lead with West On Beth and Sugaque but with the inside advantage was able to hold out the challenges. The son of champion Miata, Shift Pattern accelerated quickly along the rail in the middle stages and loomed as a threat but Fire Blaze found plenty in the run home, winning by two and a half lengths in 22.78. Shift Pattern finished second for trainer Paul Stuart who also bred Fire Blaze. The Chris Halse trained West On Beth finished third ahead of the Corey White trained Lee’s Maggie. Fire Blaze has now started 21 times for 7 wins and 10 minor placings. Part owner Barry MacKinnon was ecstatic on the dias, “I’d like to thank my son Stuart for buying me a share in this beautiful greyhound. Thanks to the Mandurah Club, tonight’s sponsor A1 Salvage and Hardware and to John and Di Carmody for training Fire Blaze. We lost this race two years ago by a nose which makes tonight’s victory even sweeter.”

Race 1 Number 2 STRATOSPHERE : Rocketed home to score in a fast 27.61 after a moderate jump.
