20161210 – Cannington Saturday

“Halse wins Anniversary Cup”

The Anniversary Cup was first run in 1974 when New Season scored on the old Cannington track over 530m. Notable winners since include Sand Pebble (1989), Ohio (1994), Ultimate Rebel (2001), Lewie The Legend (2005), Pedrosa (2010) and Tureaud (last year). Tonight’s field had plenty of depth with Fun Boss (box three) and Penny Monelli (box 8) sharing favouritism. Both chasers lacked early zip though and Who’s Got Snoop from box two pounced on the early lead. A line of five pursuers bumped each other at the first turn which enabled Who’s Got Snoop to establish a very comfortable lead. Outsider Dandalup Doll gave chase but was unable to reel in the Chris Halse prepared chaser and the margin was a tidy four lengths. Dandalup Doll held second at juicy odds and Penny Monelli finished third. Who’s Got Snoop has now started 43 times for 19 wins, 11 minor placings and over $87,000 in earnings. The victory also gave trainer Chris Halse a race to race double after Times Square saluted over 520m.
