“Gideon Monelli wins the Mandurah Derby for David Hobby”
Nambeelup based trainer David Hobby won his fifth Mandurah Derby tonight with his gifted youngster Gideon Monelli. Hobby won the trophy in the past with Mario Monelli (2002), Chuck Monelli (2010), Sieben Monelli (2018) and Crumble Monelli (2023). Tonight from box five Gideon Monelli was able to work through early crowding to get into second position behind speedster Tarawi who found the lead from box two. Gideon Monelli took over at the top of the straight before zooming away to win by six lengths in an amazing time of 27.23. Tarawi held on to second and a length away third was the fast finishing Harvey McGraw. Gideon Monelli’s litter brother Stan Monelli enjoyed no luck from box seven and did a great job to finish fourth. Four heats of the Mandurah Oaks were also contested tonight with first and second from each progressing to next Friday’s Final. The heat winners were Apple A Day (27.89), Sunset Clarice (27.44), Pam Keeping (27.49) and Naughty Evie (27.69). The box draw for the Oaks ;
