Spencer wins the Mandurah Cup by a mile for Rod Noden

The Mandurah Cup was first run in 1979 when Hunt’s Reject scored over 530m on the old Mandurah track. Notable winners over the years have been Windfire (1984), Sandi’s Me Mum (1991), Reggemite (1999), Foolish Girl (2005), Astrozone (2017) and Molfetta Cruise (2024). An elite lineup was assembled for tonight’s final with the likes of Boracay Storm (box 1), Iconic Jet (box 2) and Spooky Hook (box 3) all drawing favourably near the inside from the 488m bend start. However as the boxes opened a blue flash crashed left by the name of Spencer and he quickly took the outright lead for Canning Vale trainer Rod Noden. Rank outsider and reserve Macaroni Monelli (box 5) used the shepherd to muster into second position while the main fancies were all squeezed out of contention. The further the race went the further Spencer extended his lead with the former Victorian officially winning by 8.75 lengths in a new race record time of 27.08. Macaroni Monelli held down second for Trevor Augustin and returned $6.00 a place and three lengths away third was the Shayne Williams prepared Iconic Jet. Spencer has now won 15 of 61 and this evening’s $60,000 cheque takes his career earnings over $156,000.

Race 2 Number 1 WEST ON TAPPER : Relished the switch from Cannington to Mandurah and won by six lengths.

Race 4 Number 3 PRONTO ROCCO : Found the lead and showed what he can do, beating Surf The Sun and returning $64.60 on tote.
