“Iconic Jet wins the Nambeelup Cup in 27 seconds”
The Nambeelup Cup was first contested in 2003 when Tony Bishop won with Tilly Whim over 530m on the old Mandurah circuit. Big name winners since include Blunatik (2006), Uno Reltub (2011), Star Recall (2014), Senator Monelli (2016), West On Augie (2018) and Fire Cloud (2022). Iconic Jet started a raging hot favourite tonight from box one after qualifying fastest in a magnificent 27.05. The son of Bernardo won his previous start over 509m at Northam in the very slick time of 28.93. Prior to the Northam win he took on the best sprinters in the land in Brisbane when in bother and unplaced on two occasions. This evening he was machine-like, flying to the lead and posting ridiculous sectionals throughout. His winning margin was 8.25 lengths and his time was 27.00, a new race record. West On Cole soldiered on well for second and Little Wildfire finished third at long odds. Iconic Jet has now won 19 of 32 career starts for owner Carli Taylor and trainer Shayne Williams and looks set for Group success in the coming months.
