20230427 – Northam Thursday – Derby Final & Oaks Heats

“Crumble Monelli cruises to Mandurah Derby glory at Northam”

WA’s rising star Crumble Monelli didn’t break a sweat when winning today’s Mandurah Derby. The brilliant beginner clocked a sizzling 5.69 early before winning over 509m in a near record 29.07 for owner/trainer David Hobby. Runner up Eugenius for Jay Jacobson looks set for a very bright future after only being beaten 3.50 lengths by the champ. Earlier in the afternoon Dandalup Pearl improved sharply to win from box one for Southern River based trainer David Magistro. The daughter of Mepunga Blazer had drawn wide at her previous three starts and was posted deep on each occasion. This afternoon he was well backed from the inside box and after a nice clean getaway was able to drive through and lead. Race favourite Zipping Peggy began fairly from box two and settled third at the first turn. As they straightened Dandalup Pearl dashed away and while Zipping Peggy worked into second position Dandalup Pearl won by a comfortable margin of three lengths. Zipping Peggy finished two lengths ahead of Macey Keeping who ran a nice third from box seven. Dandalup Pearl is raced by B. Moir, C Moir, J White and S White and has now won 3 of 23 career starts.
