20220716 – Cannington Saturday

“Columbus Monelli creates a huge impression at second career start”

Promising young greyhound Columbus Monelli produced a freakish finishing burst to reel in his rivals to win tonight’s Sign Strategy City Novice over 520m. His father Zack Monelli holds the 490m Mandurah track record and his mother Frida Monelli holds the 380m Cannington track record. He relished box one on debut when a brilliant winner in 29.74 but tonight’s performance was just as impressive. As the boxes opened he was bumped heavily and turned sideways and as the field passed the winning post on the first occasion he was in last position. Entering the back straight he was sixth and at least ten lengths from leader and second favourite No Limit Needed. The Morgan Turner trained chaser unleashed an amazing finish to prevail by half a length and achieve won of the most spectacular ‘come from behind’ victories since the new Cannington track was built. Coming from that far back over 520m to win events just doesn’t happen these days and it was a pleasure to watch.
