“Glen Currie wins Birthday Cup with Bones McCoy”
The Birthday Cup is a time honoured race that was first run back in 1979 when Newburn Lad won over the old 530m distance. Some big name winners have been Icy Monaro (1982), Fire Rock (1995), Zalock (2003), Back Tonight (2007 and 2008), Astrophysic (2016) and Miss Bamsy (2018). A rich field was assembled for tonight’s $60,000 Group Two Final and Bones McCoy and Destruction shared favouritism. The pair began beautifully and matched strides into the first turn with Bones McCoy using his inside advantage to hold the lead. The son of Aston Dee Bee motored away from his rivals in the middle stages and whilst Sunset Piper took ground off him late he scored by half a length. The former NSW chaser boasts a nice PB of 29.62 around Wentworth Park and was always going to be hard to beat once he led over 405m. He is prepared by comeback trainer Glen Currie who has been back training greyhounds for a couple of years out of Wundowie, a town in the Darling Range 67km north east of Perth. Currie trained plenty of winners in the 1990s in both NSW and WA and was proud as punch with his Group Two triumph tonight.
