“Fabs Gem claims Birthday Cup for Martin and Barranca”
The Mandurah Mail Birthday Cup is a time honoured race that was first run in 1979 when Newburn Lad won over the old 530m distance. Some big name winners have been Icy Monaro (1982), Fire Rock (1995), Zalock (2003), Back Tonight (2007 and 2008), Astrophysic (2016) and Miss Bamsy (2018). Tonight’s feature final offered $60,000 in total stake money with winning connections taking home $40,000 and glistening silverware. Promising youngster Mermaid Monelli flew out of box seven to lead at the first turn and Mottza settled second on her outside. Track specialist Fabs Gem lobbed in third position while the others were all inconvenienced and dropped out of contention. Turning for home Mottza levelled up with Mermaid Monelli and Fabs Gem launched a challenge three deep. Fabs Gem powered over the top to claim a spectacular victory, scoring by two lengths in a new PB of 22.52. Mottza dead-heated for second with Starlight Yoyo who exploded home late on the rail and a head away fourth was Mermaid Monelli. Fabs Gem is raced by Anthony Barranca and trained out of Southern River by Greg Martin. She is a genuine track specialist who has now won 15 of 28 over 405m, 21 of 50 overall and over $100,000 in earnings.
