20191221 – Cannington Saturday – Christmas Gift

“Another Feature Win for Reidy’s Runner and Christine Bennett”
The Christmas Gift is a feature event that was first run back in 1975 when Heather Diro won for Dennis Calleja. Other notable winners include Blue Echo (1984), Sand Pebble (1989), Gemarly Park (1996), Jennev (2002), Miata (2012) and Ramifications (2016). Tonight’s edition was collectively worth $30,000 in prize money and a fantastic field was assembled to race over 715m. Reidy’s Runner was sent out a $2.00 favourite despite drawing box five but boasted a fine record over 715m and also won the National Distance title over the same distance earlier in the year. Gran Amor and Grace Ali jousted for the lead in the early stages and Reidy’s Runner settled in a lovely position just off the pace in third position. With 200m to go Reidy’s Runner surged around the pair before dashing clear to win by four lengths. Gran Amor was the runner up a length in front of Grace Ali and close up in fourth was promising stayer Who’s Got Spice. Reidy’s Runner has now won 23 of 61 career starts, over $262,000 in stake money and also took the lead over West On Augie and Premium Share in the 2019 Cannington Trackstar Award.
