Marydoll on Target for Birthday Celebrations
Resurgent chaser Marydoll is a serious hope to claim her first piece of group race silverware when she contests the Group 3 Mandurah Mail Birthday Cup (405m) this Friday evening.
The red fawn speedster, now in the care of trainer Kody Charles, has bright prospects from an inside draw after qualifying as the fastest runner from last weekend’s heats.
Even so Charles knows that his greyhound will need to produce her best if she is going to overcome some tough opposition which includes defending champion Pepper Fire, Perth Cup winner Equanimity, 2017 Mandurah trackstar Desert Rampage and Miss Bamsy.
“It’s a really good field but the draw is alright for us,” Charles said.
“She’ll need to lead to win it but that’s also true of several other dogs in the race.
“She’s a pretty consistent beginner, more often than not she’s up there, so with a bit of luck she can find the lead.”
Marydoll returned to racing late last year following a six month stint on the sidelines after coming into season.
During that time Marydoll was transferred into Charles’ kennels and the Hopeland based trainer was more than happy to welcome the greyhound into his team.
“She’s always been a more than handy chaser and she is capable of running really nice times so she’s been a great pick-up,” Charles said.
Marydoll saluted in her first start for Charles back in mid-December and then got another couple of runs under her belt before claiming her Birthday Cup heat with an all-the-way victory in 22.55.
“She’ll be at peak fitness for the final,” Charles said.
“It’s exciting to have a dog in a race like this but whatever happens this week I’m looking forward to seeing what she can do in the future.”
Marydoll has won 15 of 43 races and she has jumped from box three on five occasions for three wins and two minor placings.
