Media Release - Mandurah 490m Events

Monday 4 October 2010

To download a copy of this Media Release please click HERE.

Greyhounds WA has conducted a survey of the Mandurah track following the remedial work undertaken in April to various sections of the running rail. The survey confirmed the race distances of 302m, 405m and 647m as being correct; however the 492 metre distance was found to be exactly 490 metres.

Whilst the recent re-shaping of the rail may have influenced this discrepancy, it would appear that the original track survey conducted in 2006 following the completion of the new 599 metre circumference track may have been incorrect for this start point.

Changes required in the RWWA Greyhound Racing System and on-course signage have been completed to reflect the correct distance. The 490 metre distance is now being quoted for all events over that distance effective from Friday 1 October 2010.

It is important to note that the positioning of the 490 metre starting box has not been altered in any way as part of this process. Greyhounds competing from that start point are, in effect, racing over the same distance to what they have done since the new track first opened in November 2006.

RWWA and Greyhounds WA have agreed that the historical details for greyhounds previously competing in events quoted as 492 metres should not be altered as those events were advertised and conducted over a distance believed to be 492 metres at that time.

The result of the distance change is that statistical data provided in the Greyhounds WA racebook, TABform, The West Australian and other form publications for events conducted over 492 metres will not initially be shown for greyhounds now competing over 490 metres. These statistics will gradually build as greyhounds compete over the new distance. Where possible, Mandurah box statistics published in Greyhounds WA racebooks and TABform will include 492 metre statistics until such time as a reasonable number of 490 metre events have been conducted. In the meantime the 492 metre box statistics are a true reflection of events to be conducted over the new distance given there has been no physical change to that start point.

Track and race records over 490 metres will commence from the first running of events over that distance.

Miss Slick wins 2009 Greyhound of the Year
Sunday 14 February 2010

Contenders: Joanne Monelli, Miss Slick & Red Shilling

The Max Julien-trained Miss Slick was recently crowned the Schweppes WA Greyhound of the Year for 2009. Miss Slick raced 39 times during 2009, recording 10 wins and 11 placings for a total of $216,550 in stakes, plus an additional $43,400 in WESTCHA$E breeder bonuses.

Her most notable performance during the year was her victory in the Group 1 SKY Channel Perth Cup in March. Her owners Max and Pam Julien collected a total of $165,000 in stakes and bonuses for that victory – the highest ever payout in a local greyhound race.

Miss Slick competed in six feature event finals during 2009 for two wins and three seconds. Her other victory was in the WA Bred Championship, the highest-staked feature final for locally bred greyhounds conducted during the year. Miss Slick, who hasn’t raced since mid December last year, is approaching $400,000 in career stakes, by far the highest amount ever earned by a WA chaser. All her stakes have come from racing locally at Cannington and Mandurah.

Dashing Corsair and Jarvis Bale Claim Nationals Glory
Saturday September 5 2009

Dashing Corsair has snatched Nationals glory with a last gasp victory in the Sprint Championship (530m) at Greyhounds WA Cannington last night.

The Queensland chaser ran down race favourite Dyna Lachlan in the final strides to claim the group one feature by a neck. The time of 30.29 was very slick considering the wet conditions.

“It’s the greatest win he’s ever had and I’m thrilled for Paddy (Dashing Corsair’s owner) as it’s the best win she’s ever had,” said Dashing Corsair’s trainer Dwyer Lennon.

In the National Distance Championship (715m) Jarvis Bale established his dominance early to claim the race by six lengths. Trained by legendary Victorian Hall of Fame inductee Graeme Bate, Jarvis Bale won the early speed battle with Smashing Amy and powered away to put the result and stop the clock in 41.93.

“He’s a great little dog to train, he’s a no fuss and I was really rapt,” Bate said. “I was quite excited during the race and I was shaking a bit but it was all good.”

Local hope Red Shilling finished strongly to grab second place from the favourite Vintage Octane.
Bate won the sprint version of the Nationals in 2001 with Henerik Bale.

Puppy Club Charity Chasers

Delaque
Delaque wins 2010 "THE WESTCHA$E" Final
The baby girl of Puppy Club. She is as cute as a button but can also run just a bit so we are hopeful she can go on and earn plenty for the Puppy Club Charities. She is trained by Peter Hepple.

Delaque has earnt almost $35,000, highlighted by her victory in the "THE WESTCHA$E" Final in 2010.

Former Promotional Greyhounds

Methane

He arrived as a seasoned 3 year old from NSW in 2009 and made a huge contribution to the Puppy Club throughout his WA career. Trained by John Carmody,  Methane raced for the Puppy Club charity - "Make A Wish".  His career earnings was an amazing $40,000.

Jazzy Judy
Jazzy Judy arrived in WA in Jan 2010 with 3 wins from 8 starts in NSW. After earning over $7000 in 6 months for the Puppy Club , Jazzy has since been sold to race for new connections.  We wish Jazzy a bright future and thank her for her contribution to the Puppy Club Charities.

Jazzy Judy

Glen Abbey Ben

This Victorian import was a valuable addition to the Puppy Club roster. What he lacked in early speed he made up for in race smarts and like his former kennelmate Puppy Club Magic he ran on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Unit at PMH. Glen Abbey Ben won over $17,000 in prizemoney. After winning his last two race starts Ben has been retired.

Puppy Club Magic

'Magic' enchanted Pupply Club members and the general race going public by conjuring wins on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Unit at PMH. Donated by Murray and Liz Worthington Puppy Club Magic he won just over $15,000 in prizemoney. Puppy Club Magic is now a much loved pet after going through the Greyhounds As Pets program.

Alley Oop
Alley Oop & Perth Wildcats

Sports fans and critics alike agree that this son of Western Front was very game. Just like his famous mum Alley Oop racked up points for a good cause, in his case the Princess Margaret Children's Hospital. He was also the unofficial 'sixth man' for the Perth Wildcats.

Western Front

She wasn't the first but she is figuratively, and in one case literally, the mother of all promo dogs.  Under the guidence of Lisa and Nick Minutillo 'The Might Mae' became a darling of the media, mainly through her association with the Channel Ten network. She brought attention to and raised funds for The Centre for Cerebral Palsy and the Breast Cancer Foundation.

"The Great Mullet Cut" for The Centre for Cerebral Palsy
Saturday August 2 2008

After 35 years under the mullet, a new look Tony Glenny emerged from the barber's chair at Cannington on Saturday August 2.
Peter Hepple, representing WAGBOTA, had the honour of the first chop before Deputy Chairman Ray Whitby (who looked way too keen to remove Tony's locks), wife Kathie and several others had a turn.

The aim was to raise money for The Centre for Cerebral Palsy, in particular youngsters Nathan (17) and Brittony (8).

The target of $7000 was met and a very excited Nathan received his very own Meywalker Walking Frame on the night.

Well done to the local greyhound community who can once again be very proud of their fundraising efforts.

Southern River Straight Track
Monday 17 March 2008

Greyhounds WA has become a signatory to the Lease of the Southern River Straight Track. The facility will be available to owners and trainers from Monday 17 March 2008. Operating times are strictly Monday to Friday 6am to 11am. Weekends 6am to 9am.

Use of the facility is FREE, however Greyhounds WA ask that all users are mindful of their obligations to keep the track and surrounds clean and tidy. Any failure to do so, abuse of any kind, or use of the facility outside designated times will see the offenders denied access.

Barry McPherson has kindly offered his services to maintain the track on a voluntary basis and Barry will also maintain the key register.

Greyhounds WA is very pleased to regain this valuable training facility and ask the industry’s co-operation to ensure its on-going viability and success. I thank everyone for their patience in this matter.
