“Campana qualifies two for 405m Maiden Final”
Canning Vale based trainer Eric Campana unveiled a very handy sprinter tonight by the name of Laid Back Jumbo. The son of Mogambo had won three Qualifying Trials over the distances of 405m, 490m and 520m before making his race debut this evening. From box four he exploded to the front and led all the way to post a flying 22.68 over the 405m distance. The Barry McPherson trained What A Crafter flashed home but fell five lengths short of the impressive winner. That was the first heat of the Maiden Series and Campana also produced the winner of the third heat, a pint sized bitch called Fluttershy. Fluttershy had met with interference at her three career starts at Cannington but improved at box rise tonight and scored by four lengths in 22.96. Given the other two heats were won in slower times it’s fair to assume the Campana pair will start warm favourites in next Tuesday’s Final. Later in the night Campana ran second over 405m with Lady Wild Fire who was pipped on the post. She is a brilliant beginner who is going to lead more races than she doesn’t and looks set to be a great money-spinner for the kennel.
