Smithson wins Vince Caruana WA Bred Country Cup

The Northam edition of the WA Bred Country Cup was first run in 2002 when Ebony’s Girl won for trainer Vance Buttaro. Notable winners since include Stylish Speed (2005), Guinness Monelli (2007-2008), Valdahree (2011), Elite Angus (2014) and Hello I’m Leo (2016). Today’s event was billed as a clash between Starlight Asha (box 1) and Decimal (box 5). As the boxes opened Starlight Asha began like a rocket and Decimal began in the opposite fashion, blowing the start and then running wide at the first turn. Starlight Asha charged away for the easiest of wins, scoring by a whopping twelve lengths over the Ben Abercrombie prepared Toodle Lou. 100/1 outsider Bob Monelli ran a great third for Beverly trainer May Leach. Starlight Asha is trained by Nambeelup mentor Linda Smithson and has now won 15 of 36 career starts. She recorded a blazing 29.48 for the 509m distance, a time just over a length outside of the race record held by Delaque (29.39).
